Can they say they will not treat you unless you give it to them?

Can they say they will not treat you if you don't give it to them? I gave them my insurance card and they said it will take too long for them to call and verify the insurance. I am feeling like I have to give them my SSID so they can save a few minutes. That's not right!

This is not a life or death issue. Even if it is you can always get a second opinion, third opinion,...and so on.

Go to a different doctor's office then. It is common practice for the Doctor's office to ask for said info especially since your insurance info is often linked to your social security number. If you want to refuse, tell them and see if they'll still treat you. Asking yahoo answers doesn't get this result.

First of all, no statutory law in the U.S. requires anyone to have a Socialist Security Number to work or receive health care in the U.S. However, if your parents labeled you with one and you have been using it to seek employment and benefits as such, then what's the problem? Chances are it's on your health insurance card. If not, fine. You do not need to surrender it. And if you are turned down for service, that's fine too. Just go elsewhere. Lawyers have created a system where everyone is a debtor, and if you don't have the number then you're thought of as a little strange, even untrustworthy. Your goal is to take personal responsibility for your health so you won't have to visit doctor's offices which are under rigid governmental control. Visit www.cleansingorsurgery.com to enroll in His health-care system. It really works!

If you're trusting your doctor's office with your life, I think you can trust them with your social security number.
The staff in a doctor's office is highly trained and handle very sensitive information every day.

The full answer is that you're under no obligation to give it to them, but that they are under no obligation to accept you as a customer if you don't.

In some States, they may also not ne allowed to prescribe certain types of medication to you if they don't have your SS# on file. (To stop people getting multiple prescriptions from different Doctors)

Yes, they can. Doctors and insurance companies have to report certain things to the IRS (like medical treatments that may be tax deductible) so they need your SSN.
