I have a laptop and have external speakers tat connect to the computer by the headphone jack. I was wondering if the laptop speakers could still be turned on even though the external speakers are hooked up to the system.

Generally, no. The act of plugging something into the headphone jack disables onboard speakers. You could try a headphone splitter though, which would allow you to just plug both in

Yep what the guy b4 me said, once you plug something into the headphone jack, the built in speakers are disabled. So you cant have both external and internal speakers on at the same time.

If you have an audio out jack, yes you can do it but a headphone jack will disable the internal speakers.
