I live in the UK and i am going to visit my boyfriends family there. He says its nice and modern and had world class ammenities, however, my father was there in the 80's to visit the GM proving grounds (he works for vauxhual) and said it was a god-awful dump. However, the pictures shown to me look like there is some stuff there. So whats it like? Should I pack for the heap or for a night on the town?

I am from Phoenix and was raised there.

Some parts are like your father said, dumpy and some parts are nice.

It is very hot in the summer. You can do almost everything you want here. It does have all the stores and some of the biggest malls in the USA.

One of the malls has 2 roller coasters.

It is a big city and traffic sucks during rush hours.

The winters are nice and warm.

Any more you want to know? you can email me and ask specific questions.

Well, your dad was there way back in the 80's. There was absolutely nothing but the proving grounds out there. Infact the proving grounds just closed and there's huge plans for that area with shopping, restaurants and a bunch of other stuff.

Phoenix is huge now, and has everything any other big city has, but the beach. It is congested, but that's because so many people like it here, a million plus people can't be wrong.
You should visit Tempe and the old town Scottsdale area when you are here. There's lots to do there. There's the Zoo, the Desert Botanical Gardens, Tempe Town Lake, Plenty of hiking trails, there's always concerts and ball games going on, there's near by lakes and Casinos, Art museums and galleries. It all depends on what you like to see and do.

Phoenix has modernized a LOT since the 1980's. Back in the 1980's, your father was right, the place was a dump. Since then, Phoenix has made great strides - there's now a downtown, a large sports scene, a hot nightclub scene up in Scottsdale, and several musuems. It's not Chicago or New York, but you should still pack for a fun night out.

I flew into Phoenix once and it looked pretty modern. When I flew out I was almost in shock as to how big it is. Not to mention that when we were up in the sky I saw one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen in my life. As we were ascending I could see the direction we were heading was cloudy. The clouds we were flying though were illumnated so brightly by the Sun that I thought I was in heaven. Off to the side I could see lightning jumping from cloud to cloud until finally it was strong enough to blast out of the sky and strike some unfortunate soul. That place is on it's way up in the world, that's for sure. Make sure you bring a jacket just in case, but pack for fair weather.
