Depending on the age of the child, the habit should go away by itself as long as no one make too much fuss about it. Or you could try pacifier though I don't endorse it.

But as thumb sucking is a form of comfort-seeking, in older child it might be a sign of insecurity. Try finding out why the kid needs to comfort himself by doing so.

Get some stuff called 'Bitter Aloe's'. You paint it on like nail polish and it tastes absolutely vile! Your child will absolutely not put his/her thumb in again!

other than that, you are going to struggle to stop it as you can't exactly take away a thumb. try a dummy but that will lead to problems of its own.
