My son has had purple pedilyte since yesterday, tonight when he had a bm it was bright green, would this just be from the coloring in the pedilyte? his dr said to give it to him. Thanks

One possibility is that the blue dye used to turn the pedialyte purple is not getting broken down -- this is common. Since baby poop is normally yellowish, adding blue could make it green.

However, it could also be due to sugar in the pedialyte. Here's why:

My doctor told me that when my baby had bright green poop it was because he was getting too much lactose in his milk and not enough fat/protein. Pedialyte doesn't contain lactose, although it does contain dextrose (glucose).

I also found this reference:
"Green poop usually means that you have eaten to much sugar. Your poop is green because of the bile in your gallbladder. Your body does not absorb a lot of sugar does not need it if you have enough glucose in your body so it gets rid of it. I have green poop sometimes when I eat to much sugar. Nothing to worry about just eat a more balanced diet."

Green poop is normal in babies and small children. You should only be concerned if they vomit green stuff. My son who is 13 weeks old does green poop all the time. I have spoken to several peads and they all say the same thing.

Yes, it is from the purple coloring in the juice. The same thing can happen with purple Gatorade.

Yes, it will. It will also end up a darker green. Enjoy poop patrol....I have two boys 4 & 7 and have had lots of poop patrol duties....

If this is something new you are giving him, then it is probably the case. Anything in his diet also could do it, like a vegetable, etc. Probably not anything to worry about. ...but you can always call and ask.

It's my understanding that the poo is green from bile, not the food coloring. When my son is fighting an infection, he will often have greenish stools to go along with him feeling sick.

At least it wasn't purple poo!
