One of my students from last year was killed last night by a hit and run driver while he was standing still on his motorcycle at a stop light. The person who killed him has not been found.
I am very saddened by his death, as he was very bright.
So many young people are killed in car accidents, what can we do to prepare them better?

Although there does not seem to be any way to prepare someone for people doing this type of thing, how can we help them stay safer on the roads?

Grannywinnkie - you are right - today was just so hard at work - one of his fellow students who worked with him at a grocery store called in crying and told one of the teachers what had happened to his friend - then it is hard not to cry in front of our students and teachers.

Yes, the kids do get counseling and the admin and faculty and rasising funds for his funeral.

That is one thing our government does attempt to do. They do everything to prevent but some are so ignorant, cruel, and hard hearted. Pray that God will take the matter in His hands. Your job is the worst in these situations. You have to face your students and comfort them. Not too many could do that job. You also have to be there for the parents to support them. You almost have to hide in the closet to let your emotions come out. How can anyone deal with the death of any one so young? There just are no words to say. Hope they get the guy and give him the max.

How tragic that a young man has lost his life to a hit and run driver! Can your school arrange for trauma student counseling to help the students that knew him personally? So often young people think themselves to be immune to danger so it is hard to get them to face their own mortality risks.
Sometimes it helps if friends of the victim have a fund raiser for the victims family to help with funeral and other expenses. This lets them feel that they are doing something good which makes them feel more at peace and it helps the grieving family too.

It's pretty hard to better prepare people against hit and runs. Something you can do to make the odds of something along those lines happening lower is to raise the jail time a person might serve if he/she gets caught after a hit and run. Lowering the jail time or taking it away completely for a person who stops after he/she hits a person accidentally might also help because if the person is not in a rush to run away and calls 911, the person who got hit might actually have a chance at surviving.

I am so sorry in the loss of one of your students. How horrible that the accident happened but that the culprit did not stop and try to help or talk to the police. That must add to the devastation and trauma of it all.

Unfortunetly, nothing much really. There will always be killers out there. He probably would have been safer in a closer up car though.
