When I was very little my mom told me that I was a selfish, spoiled brat, and I really didn't deserve ANYTHING. That pretty much affected me from then on, either because I was always worried about what she thought of me, or because I just felt very hated and condemned.

Yes, it did. But it won't anymore. The old me is gone, and won't be back. No more putting up with that kind of crap.

We only have one chance at this life. Why let someone else's opinion affect our self-regard?

In my case, no, but for many people it sure can. Depending on who said it to you (assuming it is you) and how you felt about that person, coupled with your insecurities, such offhand remarks can sting for many many years.
