Yahoo! has a good summary of each of the Republican and Democrat candidates with their views and brief biographies here:

This website has a list of dates for all the primary elections on a state by state basis:
http://www.opensecrets.org/pres08/calendar.asp?cycle=2008

Here's a website that describes what the Democrats stand for and believe:
http://www.democrats.org/a/party/stand.html

This one is for the Republicans:

Finally, if you just don't know which party or candidates match your beliefs most closely, you can take a quiz at this site and find out:

For the most up-to-date, official information on election dates, go to the website of the National Association of Secretaries of State. Since most of the state election authorities belong to that association, it serves as a sort of clearinghouse on changes to election dates.

Obviously, when your primary (or caucus) date is depends on where you live as there is no one primary date but rather about 20 of them. The majority of people live in states that are voting on February 5th or March 4th, but there are substantial numbers voting on different dates.

You might also want to check on the party websites (both the national parties and your state parties) for the rules on how delegate selection works in your state. If the race is close, those rules may matter more than the actual number of votes each candidate gets and knowing the rules helps you protect your vote from being hijacked (because the rules do allow sneaky candidates to do that, especially in caucus states).
