On the Desktop; right mouse button click and select "Properties". Click on the "Desktop tab", then click on the "Customize Desktop…" button. On the "General" tab, uncheck the icons you no longer require.
To remove icons from a program that you are no longer using it is best the you use the "Add or Remove Programs" utility (Start â Control Panel, then select Add or Remove Programs)
To 'hide' certain files within a folder, go to the toolbar at the top, and go to Tools â Folder Options… in the "View" tab look in the "Advanced Settings" list, and under "Hidden files and folders", choose the option " Do not show hidden files and folders". This with 'hide' files such as system files, certain files of folders that you have chosen to hide, etc.
All other Icon can be manaully removed from your computer be deleting them. It's best to know if you need the icon or not, before deleting it!

Are you talking about the icons on your desktop. Simply right click on them and then left click on Delete. That will put them in your recycle bin. That's the only icon, I don't think it is possible to delete. If you can't, then once all your icons are in the recycle bin, right click again on the bin and click on
Empty Recycle Bin. If you want to bypass the Recycle bin, after you right click on the icon to get the menu, hold down the shift key while pressing delete. This will remove the icon from your system without sending it first to the RB
EDIT: The guy above me has a very good solution. I had forgotten all about that.

Right click the icon and select 'Delete' then 'Yes'.
For system shortcuts:
Right-click the desktop (the screen itself where the icons are placed), choose 'Personalize', then click 'Change desktop icons'. A Desktop Icon Settings will appear. Tick/untick the checkboxes for the icons you wish to remove/add, then click 'OK'.
Voila! You have removed the unwanted icons!
