The Crusades were a series of military campaigns during the time of Medieval England against the Muslims of the Middle East.

In 1076, the Muslims had captured Jerusalem - the most holy of holy places for Christians.

Jerusalem was also extremely important for the Muslims as Muhammad, the founder of the Muslim faith, had been there and there was great joy in the Muslim world when Jerusalem was captured.

Therefore the Christian fought to get Jerusalem back while the Muslims fought to keep Jerusalem. These wars were to last nearly 200 years.

Well, let's see.
1 - Real cause of the Crusades: the European kings coveted the riches of Palestine. They used religion as a pretext to seize those riches. Besides, it was a way to divert the aggressiveness of the so called "knights" who were always fighting one another.
2 - The only one that was successful was the first one. The others failed
3 - One of the possible permanent consequences was the Great Schism between the churches of West and East
