It's prime, which is the opposite of being composite.

If it were composite, it would have at least two prime factors smaller than itself (although the "two" factors could be one prime repeated). What could those factosr be? Well, since it ends in a 3, it's not divisible by 2 or 5. And since the sum of the digits is 8, which is not divisible by 3, it's not divisible by 3 either. It's not divisible by 7, because 49 and 56 are consecutive multiples of 7.

And we can stop right there! If 53 had two prime factors each bigger than 7 -- well, the next one up is 11, and it would thereafter have to be bigger than 11^2 = 121, which it obviously isn't. So if 53 were composite, it would have a prime factor of 2, 3, 5, or 7 -- and it doesn't. So it's prime itself.

No because a composite number must have three or more factors. And 53 is only divisble by 1 and 53. It is called a prime number.

You have it backwards - it isn't a composite number, but a prime number. That is, only 1 and itself are factors of it.

53 is not a composite number, it is not a positive integer which has a positive divisor other than one or itself. 53 is therefore prime.
