FEDERALIST, WHIGS, REPUBLICANS, were the all different manifestation of the same party. Their constituency was bankers, industrialist, businessmen or what is called Capital. At various times they made alliances with other groups, the anti slavery movement in 1860, and the pro life movement today. Until about 1900 they were protectionist so at odds with farmers , but when they became free trading farmers left the Democrats and joined the Republicans,
DEMOCRATS from the beginning was the party of the working class which was initially farmers. They were free trading so also had the support of southern plantation owners. Northern farmers temporally deserted then over slavery and permanently when industrial worker became dominate and the party became protectionist, but the south stayed with them until the 1960's because of the Reconstruction and the Civil War.
ANTI-MASONIC, formed in the 1820's as a reaction to the supposed Masonic threat to public institutions.
KNOW NOTHING was an anti-immigration movement in the 1850's that opposed immigration of Catholics and supported the Whigs the because the new immigrants were democrats.
