I am an international student (Asian) who is now studying Commerce at University of Toronto in Canada. I am very interested in pursuing a career in acting and I am now looking for good Acting programs preferably in New York City. I have heard of Stella Alder, AADA, HB Studio, Actors Studio, NYU, Julliard... But I dont know which ones are better. Secondly, the four year program of NYU is not affordable for me. Do you have any particular program in mind that you think I may benifit from? And is it common/ likely for an Asian student to succeed in an acting program in the States? And do you thinks it's a okay choice if I take 2 or more years off for performing arts program and try things out then go back to commerce if nothing works out for me as an actress?

Didn't I already tell you that you will not be able to affort the best on your list or the worst on your list. We have many Asians who succeed as actors, but they are citizens or have green cards. If you are neither, you will not be able to work in the US as an actor. If you limit your time to succeed to two years and if you have something to fall back on, you will fail as an actor. You have doubly insured that you cannot succeed.

You asked a lot of questions. I'll address just two of them.

First one is money. This is the number one thing that keeps actors from being able to pursue their careers full-time.
I interviewed a working actress. Read what she has to say. Read the entire article. http://www.actingcareerstartup.com/actor_web_site.html

Another link you should check out is this one: http://www.actingcareerstartup.com/make_money.html .
About half way down the page you will find several links that will give you some ideas to resolve that issue; ideas you may never have thought of.

You need to resolve that first, otherwise you will always have that issue and you will end up like so many other actors who never make it for that reason; because they have to WORK at a J.O.B.

Secondly, there a lot of good schools in NYC. I've been studying a place called the Ward Studio. While it is not considered one of the top schools, it did provide me with a good base. Now I'm ready to move on. I have my sights set on the William Esper Studio. Bill Esper has won an award the last two years in a row for being the Best Acting Teacher in New York. He has also turned out some top talent.

Hope that helps.

Tony

p.s. Two years realistically isn't enough to see if you will make it or not.

In NYC Julliard is the best.

Next comes Pasadena Playhouse in Los Angeles (they might even be first in some people's view)

Actors Studio is good

Another good one is Northwestern in Evanston IL
