If you want to argue that anything you learn in a business program could be learned on the job, then I guess a business degree could be considered useless. However, many companies want people to come in with a certain level of knowledge and requiring a business degree is one of the best ways to assure this.
Personally, I think a business degree is probably the most useful in the real world. With very few exceptions, a business degree can be paired with almost any interest to create a wide variety of opportunities. Plus, the world we live in just makes more sense when you have a background in accounting, economics, finance, and other business concepts.
That being said, I do believe there are still plenty of jobs out there for people who do not have college degrees. And there are many companies where you can get hired without a degree and slowly work your way up as you learn the ropes. But many times a business degree helps you start at a higher level.

No, a business degree isn't useless. Even if I was prepared to concede that you can learn all the same stuff from work experience (which I'm not), you'd be learning it the hard way by making a whole lot of unnecessary mistakes. What you learn from the degree helps you avoid the pitfalls from the beginning. Plus it teaches you how to set strategy, conduct research, and assess performance--all things you're better off knowing BEFORE you take a job in business.

A close personal friend of mine graduated with a business degree a year ago. He was hired by a bank and is now ahead of employees with more banking experience, but that have no degree.
A good friend of his, also with a business degree, was hired by a chain of stores as a district manager over several stores. There's more to a business degree than one generalized "catch all" buiness education. Finance, marketing, management information systems (the guys who earn the "big bucks", accounting, management, and others.
Business degrees give the student a valuable education. You can probably learn some of the same things from experience. However, the time it would take and the mistakes you might have to suffer to learn some of the lessons, might not be worth skipping college.

Going to college and getting a degree itself doesn't gaurantee success in business; but it gives you the overall picture of what needs to be done instead of learning it in bits and pieces on the street. Then you still have to get the street(field) experience and day to day skills needed, from real life and incorporate them into the total frame work that you leanedin school. That way you have a much better overall understanding of the business than someone without adegree. Your success still depends on your burning desire to succeed, patience, perseverance and your ability to learn from others in business.
