No, he was just made to be that way because of political correctness.The people he was decried for helping to kill off were happily slaughtering each other for religious ceremonies AND for cannabalism long before he showed up. If he was a legitimate criminal it was for crimes he committed when he was a catalan pirate.

It depends a little on point of view. Which crimes did he commit? Whom did he betray? Was he knowledgeable of his actions and consequences? If referring to the disease he brought to the American Indians off the coast of America, then he had no knowledge of medicine or disease. Sad, but stuff happens in ignorance. If you are referring to his political ambitions, then that is another matter. He did know what he was doing.
