Since 9/11 how has Islam been misunderstood in America?

i have an english research paper that i have to explain how islam has been misunderstood and how its been under false and negative accusation?? 8-10 pgs...open to all ideas and information!!!

Obviously, your teacher is a leftist and wants you to say that americans are racist and misunderstand islamic culture. If you want a good grade, regurgitate the teacher's views. If you want to tell the truth, talk about how islamic terrorism goes back decades and how 9-11 was just the largest incident. Talk about the hijackings of planes in the 60s and 70s, the bombing of US marine barracks in the 80s, the murder of Israeli athletes at the 68 olympics, and the three wars against Israel.

If you're brave, you'll remind your teacher that many people in Germany and Japan did not want war with the US either. But events force circumstances beyond what people on either side of the conflict might desire. Nations which harbor terrorists are responsible for the actions of those terrorists.

I believe Islam has been 'misunderstood', through a carefully orchestrated campaign of misinformation, fearmongering and manipulation of the media. Sadly this form of character assassination is not solely the purview of the United States, it is a sickness that runs rife through the western world. Even the title of your english paper suggests that it is a loaded question. Misunderstood. A misunderstanding suggests to me a minor or trivial offense that can be settled amicably by polite discourse. Possibly a more appropriate question would be, 'Since 9/11 has Islam been the subject of the greatest witchhunt since the 'Red threat' of the fifties? If so is such ation justified because of the alleged Islamic attack on 9/11.'
I know we're getting dangerously close to conspiracy theories, but 9/11 is a key point of the question and therefore I believe the following is pertinent. I find it impossible to believe that two buildings, such as the twin towers, would be reduced to rubble in such a way after being struck by planes or any such ballistic object. The manner in which they collapsed suggests to me, 'freefall'. I put it to you they were reduced to rubble by a careful process utilizing an expert knowledge of demolitions and accurate physics. I can only imagine the odds of such an effect being caused by the impact of a plane. Tohappen once, in such a manner, unlikely. For it to happen twice,minutes after the first, suggests something else entirely.
Now to further address the actual question posed; that of being misunderstood. Islam does have it's evils. Human rights abuses, sexual equality issues, honour killings and those thht commit acts of terror under the guise of religion. If you have a culture whose population relies mostly on the media and television for their diet of knowledge, the need for ratings and sales often dictate what 'Joe Public' watches when sitting down to dinner. I doubt that that 'Mr or Mrs public,' would watch or have the opportuntiy to watch a programme that reports on some of the better, nobler things about Islam. Education: I am a Brit and an atheist. I speak english and a small amount of french. In Islam, whether one is British, Turkish, Indonesian, one also has to speak Arabic. This is on top of, in the case of many British Muslims, being able to speak English as well as whatever language is being taught in schools. Poetry, Architecture, Medicine. Cornerstones of civilisation and Islam. Sadly, I believe we live in a world where truth plays second fiddle to perception. If we are told all that we see is evil, then over a period of time the majority will wholeheartedly believe such a thing. I belive this is what is happening now with Islam in America and around the world.

Most people after 9/11 view Muslims as anti-Christian or Jewish, anti-feminist, anti-American, or pro-terrorists.
Islam, just like Christianity or Judaism, is a divided religion. Half of the fighting that goes on is between Sunnis and Shiites, not Muslims and Christians.
Shariia law, or traditional customs found in Arab countries, is not necessarily part of Mohammed's teachings. A lot of the elder men, politicians, and law makers act like it is, but that is more of an effort to keep ancient traditions alive that were popular when Islam was in its Renaissance. (over a thousand years ago)

My view.. That all people that follow Islam are evil and terrorists. Not true... Vaction cities that depend on tourists and them spending money in there countires has fallen, causing a lose to many cities which depend on tourists in there economy.Racial slurs and not showing respect to others for who they really are .In American cities, Islamists and Muslims are treated differently in jobs they apply for, problems in holding there jobs and are treated differently because of there relegion.There children are teased and made fun of. Actually where the population of cities in the West or America is virtually less than 100 or 200 people that practice Islam, is not heard of , they really have no clue what Islam is. Example.. Louisiana probably has less than 1000 Islamists total for the entire state. All in all, you cannot judge Islam,, if you haven't walked in their shoes.

Interesting paper. I would not the negative spereotyping of all muslims due to the media. Nowdays if a person hears that someone is a muslim we automatically (at the back of our minds) think badly and this is because at the time of 9/11 the word 'muslim' was negatively thrown around alot in the media therefore an opinion was formed all over the world. I don't think it is a case of not being understood so much as it has come to light what their society is like and what they have been doing since bible times. No one knew before what they did or what was a muslim.
We never knew they existed. Now we know the horrors of their culture and life style. If that is negative who's fault is that? Every single country they are in is in war with them.

After 9-11 5000 people that week went to Islam. In New York a fire chief reverted back to Islam that very same week. Do you seriously think 9-11 was an islamic event, I will be the first of millions to tell you it was not muslim event and I myself stood there horrified when it all went down. Surely every race and every creed died that day, and I don't think I will ever feel that part of my heart ever live again when I seen and hurd what happened that day. It was no Islam and if it was muslims they are not part of the Islam that was given and never would have intentions of doing anything like that. The very truth is this. Everyone in those buildings and everyone that went to those buildings to help was everyone from all walks of life from young to old and every creed and race and religion. If you want to see anything for what it is, go down there like I did and see what happened. And look at the great people of NY how they did what no one else could ever do in the face of terror. That day truly I would have pushed the button easily on the east and you can thank god I was not at the button cause I am sick and tired of the East making trouble in my beloved WEST! Who ever did it is being revealed and who ever it was that is responsible is going to be revealed also. There is only time as we have learned of our past errors and those who committed errors against us.

I have never seen anyone with a pure heart in any religion with anyone or anything like that ever happened to anyone in any place on the face of the earth. Anyone that is involved in anything like what we have had happen in 9-11 in any bad intention is surely a non believer and I truly believe every single one of those terrorist from day one to the very last day are all and all out non believers of anything that Allah SWT or The Lord or God had in mind..
