I worked at a bookstore last year that was open every day but Christmas. When I had to work Thanksgiving, I took the initiative and organized our very own Thanksgiving in the break room. Since all of my family was 2 hours away, it was at least a little slice of home (and pumpkin pie...)

I work on a farm so every holiday I have to be there or someone goes uncared for.
Look at it this way you are a vital person to the world for caring for those people and if you weren't there the world would be a cold uncaring place for them!

My daughter was in the hospital one year up until Christmas eve, the only thing that made it easier was the fact that the nurses and other staff were soooo caring and understanding!

Don't look at it as your Holiday look at it as their holiday, it could be their last or the most lonely but with you there it can be so much better for them!!

Life does not take holidays.

I think you are resentful that other people get to take time off while you have to work. Welcome to Customer Service. It is what we do. We are the ones who are there, if required, when nobody else is.

I have not been to a Christmas party that I have not worked in over 15 years. Do I mind? Sometimes. When I wolf down a 99c cheesebuger and then stand in a corner for four hours, watching a mouth-watering spread being consumed while my feet get more and more sore, it is easy to lose the Holiday Spirit.

On the other hand, I can make a grown man cry.

I do not know what you do in the Hospital, but rest assured that you are giving a Holiday gift just by showing up for work. You contribute to saving lives. I just sing.

Just smile and be glad you dont have to deal with the extended family and all the gossip and bickering! Also no worries on having to cook and clean your house after the family leaves! :)
