Example 1 (Dawn of the Dead): "There's one zombie left clinging to the bus and we have plenty of ammo? We better scrape him off by colliding with a truck..."

Example 2 (Silent Hill): "Our strange, mentally disturbed adopted daughter is having dreams about a ghost town in West Virginia. Let's go there on vacation."

Example 3 (The Blair Witch Project): "We're lost! WE'RE LOST! Let's assume our map is useless and throw it in the river because WE'RE LOST!!!!"

Any others you want to add to the list?

Generally speaking, unless someone gets hurt or killed there is not much horror there so the victims have to be a little stupid or the film would drag on for lack of carnage.....

Not all horror movie people are dumb. The ones that are dumb are the ones that get killed right away. And sorry just have to say Silent Hill wasn't a vacation she went there to find out why the little girl was having bad dreams and to know more about who she is. And she wasn't really mentally disturbed she was the Innocent half of the girl who was burned in the town.

Any old monster movie in which the victim stood there and waited for a full minute while the monster approached them very, very slowly. Maybe they might scream or something but they wouldn't try to get away.

I thought of another example. In the movie Creepshow, Ed Harris is walking through a cemetery and falls into a shallow, freshly unearthed grave. The corpse that had been buried there escaped but he doesn't know that yet. As he's lying there, he notices the headstone move slightly off its base, but not enough to fall over. He doesn't get up. 6 or 8 seconds pass, and he sees it move again, but still he remains lying there. The headstone moves in 2 inch increments about 5 or 6 times over the course of a minute and a half, and he just lies there watching it. Finally it topples over and crushes him.

Halloween (1978)
[After "killing" Michael]
Laurie: Oh Lord, that was intense.
[drops knife]
[Michael gets up]
Laurie: Aaaaaahhhh!
[kills Michael again]
[drops knife again]
[Michael gets up again and starts choking her before Loomis comes and saves the day]

That's always been a big one where I yell "IDIOT!"

Anyhow, I think characters act like this for two reasons. First off, without stupid characters, horror movies wouldn't flow correctly, because if they're smart, the killer would be dead in the first 10 minutes, and that's not a movie. That's pretty much the real reason. Secondly, when people are under stress, they tend to make idiotic decisions, which include things listed in these examples. That's the excuse filmmakers give us.

They never escape from the antagonists when its/he's/she's near. They just wait there or just fight them back -- that could kill them. You're right, total idiots.

So the people in the movie theater can yell "NO! NOT THAT WAY!" or "OH MY GOD! WHAT AN IDIOT!" and ruin the whole movie for everyone else. :)
