If you are breathing shallow, you will yawn because you are not getting enough oxygen and expelling enough CO2.
It is 'contagious' because your premotor cortex has these neurons called mirror neurons. They make you mirror what others do, essentially. For example, if someone's teaching you how to dribble a basketball, your premotor cortex will 'think' about doing the action before you actually do it. And so when someone yawns or laughs or cries, your mirror neurons react to what their feeling is. Cool, no? (just learned that in psych)

To equilize the air pressure inside your ear drum. Its contagious because when one person yawns they let some pressure out. it throws off the air pressure in the room and the others need to yawn to equilize their ears.

I heard its that its the body's way of getting more air to the lungs. Yawns basically reset your lungs air capacity. Why people yawn when they are tired...I don't know.
