Nika S and Alex have given the best and most accurate answers.
Korea was divided into two separate military areas under the agreements between Roosevelt, Churchill, Stalin and Chiang Kai Shek of China at conferences held at Potsdam and Yalta.
The US violated the agreements by not allowing nationwide elections then creating a separate country of the "Republic of South Korea" and installing a right-wing dictator in its sector.
The Russians followed a few months later and created the "Democratic Republic of [North] Korea".
As for the people who answered about the Korean War, that was June 1950 until 1953, well after the separation.
Also, about the Korean War. The general opinion is that the North invaded the South, but there are indepandent reports by two Australian Military officers, a Naval Lt. Commander and an Army Major, along with a British diplomat that show that it was actually the South that invaded the North. These documents were suppressed at the UN Security Council meeting that sent the UN into war in Korea. What the truth is, I do not know and I believe very few will ever know.

Actual Facts
Why was Korea divided in two?
In 1910, Japan annexed and occupied Korea. At the end of World War II, the Japanese forces in Korea
surrendered to the Americans in the South and to the Soviets in the North. A line of demarcation
between the two regions was created by the superpowers. This line divided the country in two—a
communist North and a capitalist South.
As tensions between the Soviets and the United States heated up and the Cold War began, the division
of North Korea became an issue for national security. The United States installed a hard-line
anti-communist regime in the South. In the North, the Soviets installed Kim Il Sung, a staunch communist
who had lived in the Soviet Union during World War II.

Because there was a civil war in the early 1950s, during which time North Korea turned to Communism and South Korea fought to repel Communism. America got involved and helped South Korea repel the invading North Korean troops. Eventually, hostilities ended at a draw. Although no treaty was ever signed, and the war is technically not over, there has been two Koreas ever since.

North Korea and South Korea seperated because North Korea didn't want to expand and let foreigners in. They also didn't want all the new technology they were coming up with. South Korea was looking more into the future and let the foreigners help their economy by bringing invention and such.

In 1945, the Soviet Union and the United States agreed on the surrender and disarming of Japanese troops in Korea; the Soviet Union accepting the surrender north of the 38th parallel and the United States taking the surrender south of it. This led to division of Korea by the two great powers, exacerbated by their inability to agree on the terms of Korean independence. The two Cold War rivals then established governments sympathetic to their own ideologies, leading to Korea's current division into two political entities: North Korea and South Korea.
