His ability and smarts behind the plate masterminding every at bat of the opposing team, his preparation and widely lauded and respected talent with working successfully with pitchers, old and young, sets him so far above the average MLB catcher who may have a bigger average doesn't matter. I suspect he will retire in a Red Sox uniform after his next contract extension.

Boy, this will be a tough one. Check out the stats on catchers who are over 35 years old, and you'll see that they pretty much fall off a cliff. I read one scout say he thought Varitek was close to done right now.
Varitek brings a ton of intangibles to the party, and may end up as Red Sox manager some day, but you really have to be smart and look at his situation on a year to year basis.

Better start bargaining now because his agent is none other than everyone's favorite - Scott Boras.
I think they'd be smart to re-sign him, but not for anything close to the $9m he currently makes. He had a decent year in 2007, but he'll be 36 at the end of next season, which is not the age at which you want to make a high-salary, long-term commitment. If they could give him a two-year deal in a slightly lower salary range, it would be a good idea. By that time, they could have a younger guy for him to mentor, and to prove as an eventual successor.

As it was stated yesterday in a article on redsox.com, Theo and company will do whatever they have to do next year to re-sign Tek.
He may not have power numbers at the plate, but he is a dangerous hitter.
And behind the plate, the guy is amazing. No one in their right mind can dispute what a great catcher he is.

Given their track record with Schilling, Damon, Lowell and others, they will not talk contract extension. They will tender him a new contract after the season based on his performance in 2008. Same with the decision on whether to extend Manny's contract (they have the option after this coming year).

I highly agree.Teck may not have had the best offensive season but his work behind the plate may be irreplaceable.Lock him up for 4-5 years and then they can worry about other positions.

I don't think that the Red Sox will let the BEST catcher in all of Baseball go. He is the team Captain. No one is better behind the plate.
