"show me who your friends are and I'll show you who you are"

I was thinking about this quote, and how it worked with me.
I have many friends who use drugs, so i wondered if that says anything about me?
i haven't used drugs, but if I choose to have druggies in my life, does it mean that I somehow want drugs in there too?

but it didn't really change anything..

Who your friends are shows a lot about you, but there are many different ways to interpret your relationships. Some people hang out with druggies because druggies are sort of life-dropouts, and maybe you've got some issues with your life as it is, and want to drop out of some aspect of it. Some people hang with druggies, because they like to take care of people, and druggies need a lot of caretaking. And so forth. Druggies can be sensitive people who can't handle the ups and downs of life straight up, and maybe their sensitivity is attractive to you. (This sensitivity disappears as druggies and drinkers get older, though, since the world doesn't willingly take care of people whose demands for support are way out of proportion to to others, and the druggies have to resort increasingly to selfish and nasty ways of taking what they want. Young druggies can be cute, but middle-age druggies lose their appeal.)
___Druggies can drag you down. If you haven't been sucked in yet, start preparing to get some distance from them. If you need to take care of others, or need to drop out of some aspect of life, find another population to do it with, one with less of a downside.

Sounds like you need to evaluate what is so attractive about this group of people. Is it the image? Do you enjoy being around them? Are they able to connect with you in a meaningful way? Drug users are usually shallow and don't have much regard for others!!

well it doesn't exactly mean that who ever your Friends are that is who you are. but from the quote, it could mean that if your friends are druggies (an example) than people could say that you are hanging with the wrong kind of people or the wrong crowd(group). this is just my opinion. It doesn't say that you are them or act like them.

I think you hang with them because you have a low self esteem.I don't mean that to be hurtful. You feel like you are better than them because you have the self control to say no.However the temptation is always there so be careful....

Well the quote isn't meant to single out one specific trait, it's meant to describe a whole bunch...

I think it means that your friends help you find yourself-they bring out things in you that no one else can extract.
