If you are one of the 5 living people who have not seen these movies, do not read any further.
That's one I've had a very hard time with. I think I am going to go with part 2 as the better of the two. Now first of all, I cannot watch just one of them. Every time I am in a mood, I watch part one and then part two the next day, with part three added on once in a while.
The main advantage part one has over part two is the presence of Marlon Brando. Brando is great, but the Al Pacino of Part 2 is the larger than life character from the trilogy. In Part 2, we are able to see what power does to someone. It is hands down the best performance of Al Pacino's career, and I think the Vito Corleone story is probably one of Robert DeNiro's top five performances. I love everything about the movie from Michael and Tom's interactions with the Senator to the story of Don Corleone's rise to power to the Cuban Revolution scene. I will say, though, the ending to part one with the hits coming out while Michael is at the baptism is probably the best ending to a movie ever.
I think I prefer part 2 with a stronger overall story, but you can't watch one without the other, so which is better is a moot point.
Now if you were to ask for the worst, I think we could all answer which of the three we like the least.

Two different movies with their own strengths and weaknesses. Brando as Don Vito was irreplaceable. But De Niro's role in part 2 as the young Vito Corleone was a great performance. Both movies stayed pretty much true to the book until they got into Micheal Corleone as the Don.
If I have to choose, it's always Godfather first, and Godfather Part II, second.

The Godfather,
because I loved it.
Also, just by the fact that I mock The Godfather part 3 which in my opinon was horriable. I say there wouldn't have been a part 3 without a part 2.
:)

Great question! I like #2 better. Both are excellent, but I like the flashbacks in Godfather 2, which shows the father and son growing up in the mafia world.

aww man! I love the first one cause it shows how bad azz Marlon Brando is and Mike gets his hands dirty and goes to Italy and falls in love with Appolonia but I'm gonna have to go with Godfather 2 cause I liked seeing how it all got started. but they both are classics...I watch them when ever they come on.

I prefer the first one, it's a classic. It was all down hill in part 2 and 3.

The first one, but for me, the Godfather III was the best of the series. The others don't even compare.
