The best things we got for our son, especially in the early stages were:
-activity mat (we got two and still use them and he is 6 months old. He loves all the dangly things)
-anything that makes music and lights up (we got a cheap little toy that looks like a radio and plays a few songs. It has become his fav toy because he has learned how to make it work)
-a vibrating boucer (ours is a leap frog chair and has a detachable bar that plays classical music, lights up, and makes noises when you hit the little animals hanging from it)
-the best thing, and most amusing for a small child in the early months is a mirror. We bought two at Target that set up and are surrounded by foam. He loved staring at himself and it taught him to move his head to both sides
-a swing
At 5 months we have more toys, but these are still his favorites and we use all of them each day. When he was very young we spent a lot of time on the floor playing with toys. Well, I played with the toys, made them light up and make noises and he would just watch. The swing is great because it fits up to a 25 lb baby so, you can use it for a long time.

I loved having the play activity mat with toys that dangle over head of the baby. They can lay and look at them and learn to bat at/grab them eventually. My son loved that. Also a swing with toys is great. Any small toys that make noise or rattle that they can hold in their hands are good for the first six months.

at this age a play mat to lay under is a good idea. The only thing they can really 'play' with are rattles, anything with sounds or lights usually gets their attention.
If you go to a baby store look for toys that have 'birth to 6mths' written on the box.

i do no longer locate they actually care till 6 months. Even then they're in simple terms as pleased with a pair of measuring cups, a paper towel roll, and your keys. Its to no longer early to maintain a beware for the classics on for much less costly. i think of all teenagers like blocks, a pair of issues with wheels, some teethers (yet all infants have distinctive possibilities so do no longer pass nuts), a "feely" e book. as much as I hate to admit it my son had considered one of those lamaze toys (the apple) we've been given it 2nd hand so i did no longer understand what it may value. We observed one while he replaced right into some 12 months previous and that they are $30+ yet he somewhat did use it plenty. adequate that i for my section offered one for somebody else.

Until about 4 months, they don't really like toys. They like faces and would prefer you to talk to them. When they get to about 4 months, they like those floor gyms with dangly things to swipe at. When they can actually grasp things, you can give them anything to play with, providing it is safe and not too bulky or heavy to lift. My daughter is now 7 months and will play happily with small teddies, shiny things, colourful things, my fingers, her fingers, a teaspoon, things that make crinkly noises or if we're out shopping she'll chew happily on whatever I'll let her chew- a tin of tuna, whatever. I've got a huge bag full of large soft toys that her relatives insisted on giving her. They're completely inappropriate for the moment. You have to remember that kids toys are designed more to appeal to adults than babies because it's adults who buy them. You dont' need to buy anything yet. Watch your child's development and he/she will tell you what he/she needs. When the child starts grasping, provide things (toys or whatever is lying around the house) that are the right weight and shape to be grasped. When the child starts responding to noises, buy rattles and hang bells that will make noise when the child swipes them. A baby couldn't care less whether what they are playing with is an expensive toy, from an op shop, or is just a facewasher, teaspoon or tin of baby corn out of the pantry. It's all in the process of investigating, it doesn't really matter what they are investigating, just that they are allowed to touch and chew it.

babies r us has a good selection of toys.
Go to a toy store, and on the package of the toys, they usually say what age the toy is good for. (at least for infant)
Infintino makes nice toys for babies...
Anything that squeeks.. rattles... lights.. sounds... etc. have fun!

Discovery toys are great. I went to a discovery toy party, but I am sure you can find them online. Soft, washable things that they can put in their mouth but can be cleaned.
