See, I was born in Virginia, but I've spent my life abroad. Am I a Virginian resident? Even though I don't have a pertinent address there?

You are a RESIDENT of the state you RESIDE in.

Reside = Live.
You are a resident of the state you live in.

NO you need a physical address in Virginia to reside or be a resident of Virginia. The IRS needs to know and the State needs to know for billing you for the wonderful, government taxes...See....that is how it works.

No. Your US residence is based on where you live. More importantly, what state you live in and pay income taxes to.

If you pay taxes to multiple states or live in multiple states, it is the one you declare as you primary residence to the IRS.

no, you are only a resident if you actually reside there.
