Sailing ships took three weeks to cross from England to New York in the early 1800s. By 1910, ocean liners had cut this trip to just under a week. If you add an extra day and a half for the journey from Napoli or Genoa (the two primary points of departure for most Italians), then at the most, the trip took a week.
