Why do athletes smack one another on the butt? I really am quite confused by this. Please explain?

It's a positive reinforcement thing, and it's not just on the butt, but anywhere, just like chest bumping and hand slapping.

they're telling each other stuff like "good job" or "nice shot" or something...
