What were to happen if I was traveling 50 mph and I would change the gear to reverse? Would it slow down and go back or would it throw me out of control...just curious....as you can see i'm bored at work.

It would just kill the engine, it may not hurt the trans either.

LOL you dont have hydrostatic transmissions in cars...LOL!

On an automatic, it may do nothing and ignore your input and hit neutral. It could, on an older car spell instant doom for your transmission.

On a manual, you would not get it into reverse. There are no synchros on a reverse gear and it would simply grind futily as you tried to push the stick toward the reverse gear.

If, somehow you were to succeed, at getting the car into reverse and the car is rear wheel drive it would lock the rear wheels and be much like pulling the emergency brake (if you have ever done that). It would spin the car violently out of control with the slightest twitch of the steering wheel off-center.

If the car was front wheel drive you would immediately lose control of the car and go into a spin, no steering input required.

Also, your engine would begin running backwards and would backfire out the intake. IF it had a carburator this could cause a violent combustion in the air cleaner box and set the car on fire.

So, I suppose it is lucky that you couldn't ever get it into revere in the first place!

If you could get it into reverse, BIG IF, it would tear your transmission up. It would probably spit parts out all over the road and up through the floor boards and maybe even cause you to lose control and wreck the car. However getting it into reverse at 50 miles per hour is pretty near an impossibility. I won't say an absolute impossibility as I learned many, many years ago that somewhere there is an idiot who can find a way to bend or break any lockout ever designed by man. One of the first axioms in maintenance is that, "It is impossible to (completely) idiot proof any machine".

the car had to be towed

well it would be just like you pulled your emergency brake but it would probably screw up reverse pretty bad.
