NHL is like 10% away from being completely different from 10 years ago, with the new rules they added just to make the game more entertaining, like the red lines behind the Goalies net is really stupid and i think completely uncalled for.
There are a few rules that went away that did suck like the Two line pass rule (even though they keep it in video games).
They didn't need to make the Goalies pads smaller so there would be more goals when really you see a lot less goals
And the fact that the most talked about players in the NHL are rookies, like Sidney Crosby, i don't know why but it was after the olympics where Hockey started getting bored and weird.

It is just different.... a lot of people were complaining ten years ago when Dallas and New Jersey ruled their conferences with their defense first, dump and chase style of play. Everything then was about the trap and big bruising power forwards and defensmen... yeah, it was much rougher.
Was it better? I don't know... I mean I love defense so the trap was fun for me to watch but if it was only with one of the teams that I knew and liked... Today, there is more speed and skill on the ice and I can watch just about any team on any night.
The game has just evolved... i'll always love hockey so either way its both good.
I'll tell you one thing though... 10 years ago everyone despised the Stars and the Devils for playing that way. Everyone except for their fans.

No ****, and 1987 wasn't the same as 1997. You may find this shocking but the game is always changing.
All the hooking and holding was ridiculous 10 years ago, and every other goal was called off for interference. Good times.

It is much, much, much better than it was 10 years ago. That is when the era of clutching and grabbing started to go out of control. Now THAT was boring. That said, the game is not nearly as good as it was 15-20 years ago. Then you had scoring AND rough play.

The biggest reason is the penalties the players don't hit like they used to they are afraid of getting sent to the box. There are way more power plays then before also and that slows down the flow of the game.

It's not nearly as good in many ways as it was back in the 60s and 70s. The product is watered down and the powers that be keep trying to turn it into soccer on ice.

Things like this are just the product of natural progression. 10 years from now it won't be the same as it is now. I like some of the changes and some of them are just plain stupid.

Bettman needs move a team or two to Canada. And its not as rough because of the new rules that followed the lockout. I think its slowly gaining popularity again though.
