3406 is a throw away engine, when there gone you replace them. Your not going to be rebuilding them in real life, maybe fixing them all the time, be careful when installing the fuel pump and lines they clog after a rebuild make sure you blow them out. If you know someone who rebuilds fuel pumps you can really crank some power out with a pump thats turnd up, but you have to break the seals on the pump and you wont pass emissions not to mention voiding any warranty's.

Assuming Caterpillar has not changed the 3406 in the last few years it definitely is not a "throw away" engine. It is sleeved and every part in it can be replaced except the cast iron block. There are thousands of rebuilt 3406 engines running all over the world. The best tip I can give you is make sure you have and follow a Caterpillar repair manual for that engine.
