When you see the name "Jadzia," what are your thoughts? Imagine if you met a person named this, what first impression might you have based on the name or what expectations might you have if you saw the name? Ethnic background? Skin color? Nation of origin? Religion? Character traits (e.g., intelligence, sociability)?

Any help you could give would be excellent!

Once you've thought about your initial impression...I'll now tell you this: my child will be white and American, probably with medium to dark blonde hair. Do you think this name clashes at all with these features? If so, why?

Thanks so much!
Jessica W.

My initial reaction is that Jadzia would be Eastern European - Gosia, Grazyna, Jadwiga. I don't find any of those names terribly appealing, though I have loved ones with each of those names. And while the women are smart and stylish, I find their names dowdy and harsh to the ear.

If you live in metro Detroit or Chicago, I'd guess that others will see your daughter's name and react as I did. If not, I think they'll find her name either African American, a little bit Trekkie or just plain strange.

Are you trying to honor a Jadwiga in your life? That's a tough one ... since Jadwiga is Hedwig in English, you might go for Hedy instead. It's a bit more in keeping with the current trends in naming, and I think it might be less suprising to meet a white girl called Hedy than Jadzia.

It makes me think of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Jadzia was an alien character on it. She had dark brown/black hair, and I just don't think I've ever heard of it being used outside in the real world. It seems like a nice enough name, though.

Umm....I'm not fond of it. My first impression: a made up name. I'm just not crazy about it.
