Try to uninstall the sound drivers and then reinstall them.

XP Home....most people switch from Home to Professional. Home is basically the poor man's version of professional to justify selling the more expensive product to companies.

Anyway, the long and the short of it is that when you did the install it is likely that the sound drivers were not installed or not properly installed.

Find out what type of sound card is in your computer then download the appropriate drivers.

If it is a laptop then you get the drivers for your model computer.

If you have a brand name computer desktop (IBM, DELL etc) you can download the drivers from their website for your model computer.

Other computers will differ but modern desktop computers have the sound card build into the motherboard, which means you can download the drivers from the website for the motherboard manufacturer, though if you are at this stage I suspect you are probably on a steep learning curve and should either ask a friend to help you or call the shop you bought the computer from for information about the drivers.

so many places to check...

is the audio cable from the speakers connected to the gree input on your sound card/onboard sound?

Check to make sure you have your audio drivers loaded.
Right click "My Computer", properties, hardware tab, device manager, sound video and game controllers
check for audio device... download/install drivers

Check to see in the audio device was installed...
Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add Hardware

Post back your results

Good luck!

Are they plugged in?

If so, run a check for spyware
