I don't understand the point of the war in iraq. please do not get mad because my opinion is different, but I really would like to know what good it is doing to either of our countries.
some people say the reason we're in a war with iraq is because of the 9/11 terrorist attack. okay, didn't al quadea attack us? not saddam hussein, wasn't it osama bin laden? from afghanistan? i understand that saddam hussein was a bad person and should have been gone, but if we are in a war because of terrorism, why would we fight iraq when they were not the ones who attacked us.
i'm just naming numerous things that i heard were the reasons for this war. another was because they were looking for weapons of mass destruction in iraq, but they couldn't find any. if there is no weapon, then why do we continue to fight.
another reason i heard was because we wanted to help the iraqis. okay, how exactly are we helping them? they don't have a stable military, so basically we're just killing them off? (c)

You sound like a Democrat. Welcome to the club.
Here are a few reasons:
1) Back in the 90s, Saddam Hussein sent 5 assassins to kill George H.W. Bush.
Lil' Bush wanted revenge.
2) During the 90's Gulf War, Saddam launched a scud missile attack at Israel.
Israel wanted revenge.
3) Iraq nationalized their oil fields as have many other oil countries, denying big oil companies from controlling the world's oil supply.
The oil companies wanted revenge.
4) During Saddam's reign, he exiled former politicians in Iraq, and many others voluntarily fled the country. One of these Iraqis was named Chalabi, who the U.S. installed as President of Iraq after our conquest of Iraq.
Chalabi and other exiled, angry Iraqis fed false intelligence to U.S., British, and German intelligence agencies about WMDs in Iraq.
Iraqi exiles wanted revenge.
Just a heads up: Wealthy Iranian exiles who fled Iran in 1980 are also feeding false information to our govt. trying to get Bush to attack Iran.
These Iranians want revenge.

Saddam hussien had nothing to do with 9/11 not did any iraqie person ever do harm to any american, so seeing we will never know why we went there I'm guessing it was all for money either private comapnies making it and kicking back to our officials or thru the oil. We won't know as our country covers lots of bad things up they do.all I can say it was a very bad mistake and our president is to blame and he''ll walk out next year and the new president will get the blame for leaving or staying. If we stay there will be lots of pressure to leave and if we leave there will be a civil war and we''ll get blamed for that, so i see no way out easily.

I think the main reason behind the "WAR" and subsequent occupation is to instill democracy where there was tyranny.
The thing about democracy is that it elicits freedom. The thing about freedom is that it is contagious. A free middle east is a safer middle east. A safer middle east is a safer world.
If this monumental accomplishment ever happens, it may be 100 years from now, Bush will be reveled as a genius. Yea, I know, it sounds far fetched, but that is what I think the war in Iraq is about.

There are no pros. We're not making progress and the smart move would be to leave and get out of there. If I was president here's my plan of action.
-I would withdraw all troops from iraq.
- I would put money into strenghtening our military, It would send a signal across the world that America is not all about Wars we just want peace and we want to remain strong.
- America is going downhill now with the falling economy we need to be a strong nation and remain that way, I would focus on more important matters, war is not of my interest.
-The rest of the world hates us, We need to develop better relations with other countries.
And bush not approving stem cell research? I support it. I would put a big focus on global warming, you can only ignore it for so long let's tackle this problem now it doesnt help to avoid your problems and put them off till its to late.

They are pretty minimal. It does serve US strategic interests to have a strong military presence in the Persian Gulf. It did depose a brutal dictator. It is keeping radicals from siezing complete control of the country and setting up an anti-Western, pro-Iranian, terrorist-exporting government. Withdrawing would damage US military credibility, making it, ironically /more/ likely that we'd have to resort to military force in the future to resolve disputes with hostile nations.
So, there are reasons. Cynical, geopolitical reasons that are anything but inspiring to young idealists, but compelling none the less.
Sorry.

Cheney used to work for a company called Halliburton. Halliburton was looking for war profits. Iraq seemed like a good place.
