A common factor is a factor of 2 or more numbers.
the factors of 12 are: 1,2,3,4,6,12
the factors of 21 are: 1,3,7,21

1 and 3 are both common factors of 12 and 21.

Greatest common factor is the largest number that fits in both numbers, so in this case, 35, since it fits in 70 twice and 35 once I wouldn't know how to go about the second one really.
