When you REALLY first started broadening your music horizons, what was the band (or plural) that started it all for you?

I have 3: Radiohead, Sparta, and At the Drive-in did it for me.

aries4195 - No offense. But if Fall Out Boy is what you think got your started, then you still have a long way to go. I honestly didn't even expect an answer like this. -sighs-

The first two albums I bought (albeit on cassette) were Clannad "Legend" and Iron Maiden "Live After Death". Which kind of tells the story really - atmopheric medieval flavoured stuff on one side, and heavy but melodic awesome music in Maiden's case. Then later the other band that took me in a 3rd direction was Candlemass. Their epic sounding doomy metal took me in further dark & mystical directions. Most of what I listen to can be traced back to those three beginnings.

Interesting question. I've loved music all my life so it's hard to narrow it down.
Iron Maiden and Deep Purple (Perfect Strangers LP) really got me interested in learning to play the guitar.

The Cure got me interested in alternative. I remember hearing it at party and asking everybody until someone told me what it was. That was back in '84, yikes.

I was at a friends house and his brother was playing "Chemical Warfare" by Dead Kennedys. That was what got me interested in punk.

I heard "And You and I" by Yes when I was in college and have been a prog rock enthusiast ever since.
