The reason that most jackets are so thin is because they are "shells" - an uninsulated jacket with only wind and waterproof protection.

The best kind of shells are those with a vapor barrier, not just a coating. These cannot work properly with insulation sewn under them so they only come as shells (GoreTex, etc)

The advantage of a shell is many. First, they breathe better which is a very big deal when you are exercising hard - you will be more comfortable. Second, when it is warm you can take off a fleece or hoodie underneath - layering is the best way to go.

The really high end shells usually have a provision to zip in a liner or may even come with a zip out liner - many North Face jackets do this.

The only disadvantage is the seperate pieces and the fact that this costs more. But since you probably already have sweaters or a fleece you can wear under it - go with a shell.

Good Luck

So you can wear layers.
And you don't really need super expensive layers. I just wear streetwear under my shells unless it is going to be really cold, and I mean REALLY cold, and I have always been fine.
