Truthfully, I'm not a fan of horror movies myself, and "The Exorcist" creeps me out big time.

However, I'd still recommend the original "Halloween" and the original version of "The Fog". Both were directed by John Carpenter.

If you get easily freaked out by a lot of gore, blood or nasty special effects, neither of these movies have those. In fact, what makes these movies so good for non-horror movie fans is that they rely more on creating genuine terror and suspense by what you DON'T see onscreen. Carpenter also uses music to set the mood and tone.

In Halloween, the psychotic killer Michael Myers is creepy not because he's running hacking everyone to death with a chainsaw, but because you never know when he's going to appear onscreen or pop up in the background.

Forget the crappy remakes of these movies, and check out the originals, which are considered to be true classics by many horror movie fans.

If you're planning to watch it alone, in a darkened room with no interruption, 'Nightwatch' (starring Ewan McGregor) can be quite scary..... I'm not usually a fan of horror movies, but found it can be chilling. I dont even think its supposed to be a horror movie. Other than that, I would recommend the classic 'It', based on the Steven King novel about a killer clown. The sequel is crap though, dont go there.
