I ahve a murray self propelled lawn mower, It starts and then dies,,,what could cause this? at times it will?

stay running long enough to start to cut then die,,,other times it starts then dies,,,

It sounds like it is not getting enough fuel. Check the fuel lines for blockages or kinks, clean or change the fuel filter, make sure there is no sediment or other debris in the fuel tank. If that all checks out you may need to clean or replace the carburetor.

Install a new spark plug.
