I am running Windows XP. Everytime I restart my computer the system requires that I go through an error-checking of my primary hard drive. I ran the error check on the system and it found nothing. Then next time I start up the computer again, it requires the error check again.

On a related note, the system refuses to accept a keystroke from my USB keyboard. I now have to keep an old PS/2 style keyboard to abort the error checks.

Any thoughts on what I can do?

Hi. There is a flag set if you turn off your computer by turning off the power. This flag needs to be reset. I would reset the BIOS and try that first.

You might have something in scheduled tasks enabled where it will do a hard disk check everytime on start up. I'm not sure how to turn it off but it should be pretty simple. Maybe your not shutting down correctly? If you just turn the power off by the button, I think the computer will automatically do a disc check on start up? You will probably get better answers. good-luck!

run defragmenter(disk)and clean up (perf/maint, off control panel).
click on my computer icon, right click c drive and check to see if auto error checking is enabled .if all is ok you could have a faulty program in xp or bad sector on the drive
