i am a maintance tech and have taken a shortboy 40 gallon water heater out of and apartment, i cant tell if its metal or galvanized metal, its black, maybee powder caoted? is there anyway to treat it if it is galvanized? and how can i check to see if its galvanized...

I really don't know. Of course you can get one for $40.00, but it is more fun to tinker with stuff. I just had to mess with Paul a little bit.:-)

The inside is probably glass lined basically similar to the melted on porcalin finishes on old cast iron tubs. If you can find a serial # you can check with the company to see what materials are in it. If it does turn out to have galvanized finish don't use it as a smoker also remember to remove any soldered conections as they will melt and give off toxic fumes reguardless of weather they contain lead or lead free solder. You may find that even a glass liner may start to flake under high enouph heat which I'm sure cant be too tasty.

Many modern water heaters are glass lined. Look up the manufacturer on the web for specific info.

Why don't you just buy one? You can get a little R2D2-sized unit at Home Depot for about $40.
