Anniversary gifts are not just for people getting married. They are for anniversary's. After 4 years of dating, I would think that you would have some ideas....and what your boyfriend is interested in.
A weekend trip can be nice. I have gone on an overnight murder mystery weekend. That was fun. They even just have murder mystery dinners/show. Tickets to a concert? Sporting event he might like? What does he like?

you have to give him a memory. Something that he can enjoy
If you need an original gift try http://www.photoartomation.com/ArtWork/pages/14_Colored_Pencil.htm They convert ordinary photo into Art.
I bought a Gift Certificate from http://www.photoartomation.com/services/Gift_Certificate.html and ordered art picture. it turned out to be wonderful! It was a present for my boyfriend on our anniversary and he loved it. It looks like a real painting! All of our friends are impressed and I’ve been telling a lot of people about this place.

I'd suggest stuff since me and my boyfriend will hit 4 years in january but we don't get each other gifts for our anniversary. instead, we take off work, leave town and stay somewhere (we stay in haunted b&b's cause that's our thing but you get hte point). We go out and have dinner and check out town and just spend some quality time together and celebrate us. We split the cost and it's like a gift to each other.

I have a great Idea, you can purchase 8 hot laps around calder park race course in a V8 super car. He will get to drive the car and have a photo taken as well... Its an awsome thing to do then you can organise a hotel with a spa in it for the night to wind down..... good luck

a nice massage day for the both of you would be nice... or maybe a picture of when you first started dating make it in black and white and in the same frame put a more recent picture in color decorate it with quotes or movie stubs like a scrap book kinda.

Or plan a weekend getaway even if its not that far you can just get a nice hotel and have dinner spice things up a little

If you've been with a man for four years, it's time to decide whether he's worth another four years. So what is it going to be? How long will you be with this man before you wish you could have gone back? Or are you emotionally equipped to marry him right now?
