3 to 5 months old sounds about right. Just make sure that you clean their ears out afterwards so they don't get an ear infection.

We are currently taking a mom and me swimming class and the babies need to be 4 months old to register. Although you can get in if your baby turns 4 months during the class. They really just want your baby to have good head control.

It's actually better to get them used to water at a young age so they are less afraid of it. Infant swimming lessons teach babies to be submurged for a few seconds without panicking (the usual cause for drowning for infants and children) and to automatically turn onto their backs and relax when in the water so they can float safely. I think it's an excellent idea. My health club offers lessons for babies starting at 8 months and I plan to enroll my daughter in the next few weeks!!

The public health nurse said it is often advised to wait until after your baby's first vaccines, but after that it is okay. So that would be at about 2 months. I know they accept infants in water babies swimming lessons here at 3 months.

Depends on whether you mean fresh water or a chlorinated pool. Fresh water is more likely to harbor bacteria -- my pediatrician told me to wait until about a year. Home chlorinated pool (i.e., few users, cleaner than average) about three months. Common use pool, about 6 months. At least that's what my pediatrician recommended.

i agree that they are fine anytime, i just always make sure i give my daughter a bath immediately after so the chemicals dont bother her or dry out her skin. I think she was 2 months when i took her for the first time.

i took mine at 3 weeks old ; Dscovery channel shows a birtghing center where they take babies outside in a pool and teach you to lift them up and down and say one, two, three and blow in their face and submerge them, and I did this with my son and he held his breath and came up paddling ...... and he enjoys our pool ......
