Best is Dell, but it is not the cheapest.

Dell. The Dell Vostro 1400 starts at $549.

The biggest reason I'd go with is the vostro 1400, 1500 and 1700 have a Magnesium Alloy chassis for added durability but are only a few pounds.

go to www.dell.com, then select business class laptops.

Get HP or Compaq. If you are not doing anything crazy with it, a Pentium dual-core or AMD AthlonX2 will be fine. Otherwise, go for better processors like Core 2 Duo or AMD Turion X2.

Best Buy has Gateway with Turion X2 for about $600. 14" - not too small, not too big. Hard drive is 160GB, pretty acceptable. RAM is 1 GB, should be ok with Vista.

Otherwise, you can go around your local store to find others with similar specs but different processors. I do not recommend Celeron because it is slow.

Depends:
For schoolwork, a Dell or Tobisha Brand is Best
But for Music and Video, go with an Apple

i would suggest dell, because they ARE CHEAPER IN THE LONG RUN, your better off forking out a bit extra for a better computer tat will last you say 6-10 years before is obsolete, then a cheap one that you will just have to replace in like 2 or 3 years

HP - hands down.

Why? Laptops go out. They all do. Stuff happens. Mine did. Contacted them on the Internet. Next morning Fed-Ex brought a box to put it in and picked it up that afternoon. Two days later, they brought it to my door. All fixed. Total cost: $0.00 and I never left my house. That's service!!!

When your warranty expires, HP will offer extended warranty. Buy it! Forget store warranties.

Mesh. They are a medium size company from Scotland. They are very highly rated in reviews and win lots of awards. They are also very good value for money.

Hmmm... I would recomend Hp. It runs the fastest and is the most reliable company. Although it is new, it makes awesome computers!

You want a good one, but cheap? That does not make sense to me, but if you want agood one that will last along time, I reccomend a Dell.
