diesels are very efficient, and last a long long time, their "pros" are outweighing their "cons" lately..

If I could get the Peugeot I drove last time I was in Europe I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Hugely efficient and fun to drive, it was a 407 HDi. I got over 50mpg driving gently and still got near 40 when I thrashed it through Scotland. The masses of low end torque make for really relaxed driving, it would pull from walking speed in fifth gear and do well over 100 in top (not that I'd know, of course). They are just starting to import the high output clean diesels, that Europe has had for a decade and more, in to the USA. Can't wait! Much better than a hybrid.
