I want to get my songs but my dad is afraid he will get sued. He told me that if i can convince him otherwise then he'll let me. Please give me some ideas.

Well, first you will have to convince him that the laws of the United States have changed to make the theft of music legal. Otherwise you can realize he is simply smart enough to prevent you from breaking the law in his house.

Martins answer is both right and wrong.

Right on the p2p not illegal, content is part.

Wrong on the ways the music companies find you.

Do know that some ISPs, maybe yours, are now actively blocking or slowing down p2p traffic. Not good, but worth knowing.

Maybe you can compromise and he can give you a certain amount to spend on a pay-per download service like itunes or napster each month?

And of course you can always have fun at your friend's house :)

Millions use p2p. But not many people are arrested or sued for it. The only way it could really happen is if someone was personally spying on you, or there is a cop behind you. Plus, p2p isn't illegal, it's just that some of the stuff on the networks is illegal.
