It's a joke, and anyone supporting him needs to stop spouting nonsense and check the statistics. Here's how Wright ranked in the NL among third basemen:
Fielding percentage - 8th
Range factor - 7th
Zone rating - 8th
People talk about him making highlight plays by getting to balls others wouldn't reach, but it's just not true. Zone rating measures how much ground a player covers, and Wright ranked below seven others. Sure, he may have made some great plays, but he also didn't make many others that better defensive third basemen this year would have made.
Again, this is a case of people trying to decide who deserves an award based on highlights they saw on Sportscenter. Fans are very selective in what they choose to see, and it usually gets molded to fit their perceptions. Wright did NOT deserve this award by any measure.

No, he does not deserve the award. He won because he's a good guy, and a good offensive player. The fact that there has been talk of the Mets moving him to first or second should say it all. 21 errors is a very high total for a third baseman, who doesn't get that many chances compared to a second baseman or shorstop. A-Rod had a few more errors than that last season and his year was considered a disaster in the field. It is just a joke, Scott Rolen is still the best.

I just posted this in another Chipper VS Wright thread, this is what I put (you'd be surprised who I picked).
David Wright makes more WOW! plays, but I think his defense isn't as good as other people say, he had a .954 and 21 errors. I say it comes between these guys.
Pedro Feliz
Chipper Jones
Scott Rolen
In selected categories this how they ranked.
FPCT:
1: Pedro Feliz
2: Chipper Jones
3: Scott Rolen
Errors (least)
1: Chipper Jones
2: Scott Rolen
3: Pedro Feliz
Range Factor
1: Scott Rolen
2: Pedro Feliz
3: Chipper Jones
Zone Rating
1: Pedro Feliz
2: Scott Rolen
3: Chipper Jones
So if each player gets two points for getting first, one point for getting second, and non for third. Here's who leads.
Pedro Feliz: 5
Scott Rolen: 4
Chipper Jones: 3
I'm going with Pedro Feliz.

Wright won because of his offensive #'s. This was proven when R.Palmeiro won the gold glove for first base while playing for the Rangers. He played 28 games at first base that year. I don't even pay attention to the Gold Glove anymore.

Gold Glove awards are voted on by the managers. They may remember getting robbed by particular players who show great range that others do not show. Counting errors is for stats geeks. I'll take Wright or Ryan Zimmerman (alot of errors too) at third over Jones because of their ability to get to balls that others would watch go by.

Gold Glove voting is a joke. The people who do the voting do not get to see palyers on an everyday basis, usually they vote for the guys with the best reputation.

He made 21 errors because he gets to balls no other third baseman would even be in the same time zone as. He seemed to make at least one highlight film play every game. The man is simply a wonder to watch fielding his position, and he just shows that there's more to being a great fielder than fielding percentage.
Chipper Jones? He had 140 fewer chances, 32 fewer putouts, 98 fewer assists, 7 fewer double plays. He basically got to the balls that were hit to him, whereas Wright got to balls hit anywhere between short and the left field stands. If anyone should have won instead of Wright, maybe it would have been Zimmerman, but Wright beat him probably due to his penchant for the spectacular play.

I think he won because it is more of a popularity contest than a fielding contest. Managers vote on this and seem to like him. He is a good 3rd baseman but not the best.

because the Gold Glove Award is a popularity contest and Wright is quite popular.

ok, so he made 21 errors, but he still constantly made amazing plays to save his team. hes the best NL thirdbaseman, and actuallyy has class and sportsmanship, something a lot of plaers would do good to learn about.
