To answer the question without using too many iffy metaphors, the unresolved issues will begin to subconsciously effect their decision making. It will also influence how they perceive events around them. The real problem is that all of this will happen without us noticing, like looking through the world through sunglasses. Eventually we forget that there's a filter there and think that what we're seeing is really there, and start acting inappropriately because of it.

Because of this, we can hurt ourselves, we can hurt others, we can hurt our future, all the while thinking that we're completely justified and acting reasonably.

That's not necessarily true (speaking to all who said 'they explode', & such): I've had many, many unresolved things in my life-the earliest I can remember is way back to age 4, right up to the present (I'll turn 34 on "Black Friday"), and I've learned to incorporate those things into my life, even though I hold most of those things in, there's been no explosion or such. There is a bit of a down side, though; I have much anger & hatred, and I am fairly psychotic, but in a good way! Perhaps my tolerance is just a bit larger?

Well if that happens to me then I usually I start to blow up at every little thing that annoys me and I get left with no friends for a while. It happened once a few years ago and that was not fun so usually I make sure that things get resolved.
