None. Torturing anyone is the spirit of the devil.

In the right hands, torture does have a role to play in a wartime scenario. I do NOT advocate just letting anybody start whacking on a prisoner. But there are very effective ways to get information from prisoners, when the need is great...and time is short. There has to be a genuine and undeniable need to justify torture...but it cannot be ruled out. And it has to be done by people who have a very specific need and know how to do it with the least possible damage to the prisoner.

Personally I think it depends on who is doing the torture and for what reason they are trying to torture someone.
Having said that, anyone will break at some point, but will they actually give you the information you are looking for, most of the time they will tell you anything.
Most of the information that anyone has, unless they are high ranking Officers or NCO's is useless after a few hours.
So depending on who is torturing you and what they are trying to achieve. Some countries use torture as a method of killing you, so in that case it really doesn't matter, they are going to kill you, and information is secondary.

Your definition of Torture is not clear. I think you're referring to water boarding. This... falls FAR short of torture.
Cutting off fingers, hanging people from their genitals, tying someones hands behind their back and hanging them by their wrists... are all forms of torture.
Water-boarding, and putting woman's panties on a mans head fails to meet this level.
As far as water boarding is concerned... they don't do it for revenge as you seem to think... they do it to get the "subject" to deluge information. The technique lasts only as long as they resist.
It may very well be that your simple pimpled *** has been saved by such aquired information.
Warm regards,
Douglas

"What reasons do you have for thinking that Torture is a useful tool?"
It's kind of self evident - if torture never resulted in any credible intelligence, it wouldn't be an issue at all - since no one would be considering methods of interrorgation which couldn't produce any valid results. Since it is the hot button issue it is - it must be a "useful tool."

Our use of torture has made us look hypocrical, two faced, and double standard to the rest of the world! It has cost this country alot of respect! It maybe Mr. Bush's GREATEST SIN! Even bigger than lying to us to start the Iraq war! And he is the only one who could have approved the use of torture! Even if he says he didn't, HE DID!

It has provided reliable intelligence that has helped prevent several terrorists attacks, and helped with the capture of several prominent terrorists. Terrorists are not going to give any information at all if they know that they can't be hurt by their interrogators. It is not always the best tool but it can and has worked.

Consider this scenario. Let's say a terrorist just planted a dirty bomb at the Super Bowl set to go off in 1 hour during the game. The authorities have caught this terrorist and need to find out where this bomb is so it can be defused before it kills thousands. How would you get the info.? Negotiate with him? Ask him nicely? Be understanding of his feelings?

Well I'm sure you have to be pretty strong considering how much the person flails and struggles...
But seriously, if getting information that can help protect our country from possible terrorist makes us look weak, so be it.
