The bit about driving through puddle:

A. You a splashing water into the engine compartment wetting electrical wires and connections

The ticking sound:

A. could well be tappets need re adjusting

Grinding noise
A. Could be anything, From ball joints to wheel bearings to drive shafts.

As to the MOT:
Have your cheque book ready its going to need a little money spending on it

(Stupid spell checker wants me to spell cheque the American way)

Hi there, i would like to know what the strange noise from the front wheels is? Could be a gearbox/ Drive shaft fault. But as for the clicking from the engine, my rover does the same, and it can be extremely loud on colder mornings. Its the hydraulic tappets that thunder away and clatter but mine is an L reg with 103,000 miles on and its done it ever since i got it. I must admit i've never put a drop of oil in mine except when its changed so i can't answer that bit, but if its using a bit oil it could be the piston rings are worn. if its blowing blue smoke out the back then you will know
