Where is the best place to get my son's first birthday pics done? I am not looking for perfection, just good pics at a good price. I have never taken him for professional pics. I was thinking Kiddie Kandids, Penny's, or Sears. I have had different opinions from friends. Also his birthday is in the middle of December, when should I have them done? I know its going to busy with Christmas.

I already take a million of my own digital pics I just want to take him for professional ones for his first birthday. How far in advance do you have to schedule the appointment?

If there's a Portrait Innovations store in your area, go there! They have a $9.95 portrait package deal, you get your pictures the same day, and they have several photographers working during peak times.

I use Penney's. They're reasonably priced and have always turned out well. They have special props for the first birthday pics.
Sears is pretty much the same, but Kiddie Kandids' prices are outrageous around here. One look at their price list was enough for me!
If the birthday is in December, allow 3 weeks for the pics to come in. Call now to see when they are accepting appointments for the time-frame you need. December is a horrible time for appointments, expect long delays and bring some toys to keep him occupied (so he's not gnawing on the germ filled assortment they offer).
P.S. Check the Sunday papers for the next few weeks, they usually have coupons for Sears and Penney's.

Sears or Wal-Mart are your best choices, in my opinion, and Sears is known for quality. My nephew got his done there and they were amazing. Just check out different places and ask to see some sample shots from previous customers. That will give you an idea of what to expect.
I would schedule closer to his birthday, actually, instead of in Nov. In Nov, many families want portraits done for Christmas cards but their are fewer of these done a couple of weeks into Dec. Pick a date that you want to go in and schedule the appointment within the next two weeks. Space will fill up fast, and you want to make sure you can get into your choice studio. Pick a time that your son will be awake and happy, not ready for a nap or hungry.

I have been to all this studios Kiddie Kandids,JC Penny's, Sears and The picture people. I really liked Kiddie kandids, I really dont worry about the priece's because they always have coupons you should join the birthday club's it's free and they have good offers. Thake his picture a few day's before B-day and when you know your little one is in a good mood remember it's his first time he might not like it, like my second boy use to hate it!

We take our kids to Sears Portrait Studio. I'd probably do JC Penney, but there's no portrait studio in ours--but they always have better coupons than Sears.
As for when, what are you hoping to do with the pictures? Do you want to have them in hand to send out in Christmas cards? If so, you'll need to figure in processing time. Sears has about a two week turn around period between when you get the picture taken and when you pick them up (they do have a same day print option for more money). I'm sure that's an average turn around time for most studios, but you can call around to ask. Then you have to to figure in about another week to get them to whomever they're getting mailed to. Personally I like to send my pictures out a bit early so that they don't just arrive on Christmas Eve.
If you're wanting to capture him just as he is at 1 year old then you'll want to focus your picture taking date within a couple days of his actual birthday.
To avoid the holiday rush for pictures go during the week (avoid Saturdays and Sundays like the plague). Schedule early for the best chance of getting a time of day when your son isn't tired or hungry. Pack the outfit(s) separately and change him into them when you get to the studio. Preview backgrounds and props on the company's website before you go so that you know your options before you get there. I also make a list of the people I'm giving photos to and what sizes I'll be getting for them before I get there to avoid getting too many/too little pcitures.

With my oldest daughter, she always did remarkably well at Sears Portrait Studios. My family goes there for our family portraits... now complaints after many times there. My baby... she is the victim of hundreds of digital snaps from my camera each week, so we capture her just at home and around the community! Maybe you can snap some nice ones with your own camera?

Actually you get a larger package at walmart for a cheaper price and I know personally here in VA our Walmart where my boys have had their pictures taken were great. They turned out better than you would anticipate.
